What our Surveys Say: 5 Top Reasons Why You Love Racing GECKO Events

Friends!

As you know, after each of our events at the Awards & SWAG presentation we always ask you for your feedback.

This is what we've found out about you and the 5 Top Reasons Why You Love Racing GECKO Events.

1.  Each event raises money for GECKO scholarships that get kids outdoors!
2.  Pagosa Springs Colorado has some of the best (secret) single track and trail networks in the country.
3.  We are constantly making improvements to our events and racing formats - like the new Chip Timed System.
4.  We like to get Killer SWAG ourselves at races, so we make sure we GIVE YOU Killer SWAG at all our races.
5.  All our races present special handmade local medals & placer trophies that are sweet keepsakes of your achievement.

And a close 6th reason is that, because you're in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, you get to soak in the World's Deepest Hot Springs after you have finished crushing it on the course - no better recovery I'm sure!

With 4 races still to go this season, there's something for everyone www.joingecko.org/events
See you at the races!

We also want to take a moment and thank each and every one of you for choosing to make GECKO's XTERRA Turkey Track Trail Race part of your running story and we hope that you feel as pumped up about the day (and your accomplishment) as we do.

So here are some recaps for you:

Many of our runners came to be part of the XTERRA Colorado Trail Run Series, and the XTERRA Beaver Creek Trail Run on July 21 will be the fourth and final race of the 2013 season, which means it is the last chance for runners to earn points toward the series standings. It's a 5k and 10k trail run – check out your standings, it may be worth you heading down there to race.

Hope to see you at our next event The Mountain Chile Cha Cha o August 24th, and kick on with us for the Chile Festival and Love Music!

It Takes a Village to Raise a Child

It Takes a Village to Raise a Child - GECKO's first race for the 2013 season is a month away and we have been overwhelmed by the support and interest of our local community. The generous folk of Pagosa Springs have contacted us in their droves to volunteer and help.

There are many individuals - setting up the start/finish, marking the course, packing race bags, manning the registration and performing all sorts of important tasks on race day and in preparation, and we are grateful to each and every one of them. Today I want to give a shout out to a few of those groups in particular taking part in the XTERRA Turkey Track Trail Race:

Pagosa Trail Riders www.pagosatrailriders.com

This local ATV Club is manning an aid station for us, and is instrumental in keeping our trails maintained.

The San Juan Back Country Horsemen www.sjbch.org

This local trail riding club is also instrumental in keeping our trails maintained. They are marshaling, providing a lead out horseman and a sweep.

The Rollergirls in Pagosa R.I.P www.rollergirlsinpagosa.com

These ladies are colorfully manning our start/finish/marathon turnaround to TOUT THEIR BOUT later that night (to R.I.P up the Los Alamos M'atom Bombs at the High School) and giving our runners a discount at the door.

The Pagosa Springs High School Cross Country team - the Pagosa Pirates www.pagosa.k12.co.us

The future stewards of our local trails are going to also man an aid station for us and they know first hand how running in these events will feel.

The Pagosa Brewing Company pagosabrewing.com

Tony and crew are hosting our event after party and are also supporting the Rollergirls and their bout. There'll be great food and even better beer as well as plenty of SWAG and giveaways to runners.

There are many more thank you's of course and these are just a few.

THANK you! Team GECKO

June 15th, 2013 — A classic mountain trail run. 1/2 & Full marathon distances.

All you have to do is get on to our Facebook Page in the next 5 days and fill in the 'Ticket Giveaway'https://www.facebook.com/pages/GECKO/324829909101?id=324829909101&sk=app_428747997220326 .

This old mountain classic 1/2 & full trail marathon has joined the XTERRA Colorado Trail Run Series for 2013!

Why do so many runners return every year for the Turkey Track?!

  • Points towards the XTERRA Colorado Trail Series
  • Points towards the Trail Runner Trophy Series
  • iPod friendly
  • Chip-timed
  • Best of our trails
  • More than 90% of course is through wooded forests
  • Mellow elevation gain, less than 1,500’— the ideal early-season layout
  • Perfect transition from a 'road' to a 'trail' race
  • Famous "GECKO" awards handmade by local students
  • Great SWAG
  • Killer after party at Pagosa Brewing Co
  • 15% off accommodation with GECKO partners

Turkey Track is a spectacular 13.1 or 26.2 mile trail run on sweet single track, and with the start at 7,200 feet of altitude you're in for incredible mountain vistas and pristine mountain air as you follow the edges of dynamic canyons and through Ponderosa and Aspen forests. Plus your share of roots, rocks, turkeys and perhaps a little bit of mud! This run has mellow elevation gain, less than 1,500’— the ideal early-season layout. It's really the perfect transition from a 'road' to a 'trail' race.

Besides the scenic trails, there are lots of reasons that runners return year after year to this race, and now with XTERRA there'll be more SWAG; XTERRA sponsor on course support (aid stations will be fully stocked with all the usual snacks and fruit plus plenty of PowerBar race nutrition and Gatorade); and a chance to rack up those XTERRA points. XTERRA has supplied plenty of signage and flagging tape for a well marked, easy to follow course. Expect a stocked race bag with a free pair of top notch SOS running socks as a race memento. We're also iPod friendly if that's your thing.

Turkey Track is a race that prides itself on being a memorable day out. The friendly people of Pagosa Springs come out to make it so: aid stations are run by local community groups. This year the ATV Club Pagosa Trail Riders, the Roller Derby R.I.P team (who have a big bout that night) and the Pagosa Springs High School Cross Country team–the Pirates, are each manning an aid station. They all run like clock work and are always well stock and well briefed. As you'd expect from a race set in an authentic mountain town–there are horses! The San Juan Backcountry Horsemen also assist us on the day out on the course, up on their trusty steeds they act as marshals, lead out and sweep.

This year we have a state of the art electronic chip timing system, with splits at the half way. You'll get accurate results fast. We also have course photographers and the race is iPod friendly. We all meet afterwards at the Pagosa Brewing Company to celebrate a great day out on the trails. Every finisher will get aFamous "GECKO" medal - handmade by local students – a Turkey Track tradition.

What's more?! Expect plenty of old fashioned mountain town hospitality in Pagosa Springs (there's lots of accommodation choices with GECKO Partners who offer 15% discount for racers and their families) and you can visit the world's deepest hot springs for a well deserved soak after you run. There's plenty for family & friends to do while you're running.

And the best part for last: the reason why it's great to participate is proceeds from the race registration go to GECKO's programs that gets kids unplugged, off the couch and outside!

Event Details:

Start/Finish location. Take Piedra Road North (hwy 160 and Piedra rd) about 6 miles stay on the road until the pavement turns to dirt! Continue about 1/4 mile and turn left on Turkey Springs Road. 2 miles on the left, can't miss us. If you've run Devil Mountain you know the spot! More room and more great single-track!!!

In the Media: GECKO honors FIVE scholarships at a Banquet in Pagosa Springs

GECKO is in the papers this week with The Pagosa Springs Sun and PREVIEW A&E featuring the banquet celebration honoring the FIVE 2012/2013 GECKO recipients of NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) outdoor scholarships. GECKO raised $27,000 to send five deserving teens to programs which include sailing in Baja, Mexico to mountaineering in Alaska. GECKO gear gets a work out

Mike donned his new GECKO gear for only the second time this Summer last weekend (again in Moab), competing in the Canyonlands Half Marathon. It was a beautiful (nearly) Spring Moab day and 4,000 runners turned up to race.  Mike finished happily in the top 20 with a time of 1 hour 18 minutes and showed that he still has a few fast twitch fibers left after last year's Grand Slam of Ultra-running 100 miler assault. Team GECKO thinks: Not too shabby for a guy that weighs over 200 pounds! Go Big Mike!

Check out the article 'Running Mate' in the latest ATRA newsletter for the story of GECKO, and how Morgan and Mike met

The latest ATRA newsletter includes an article on page 4 & 5 called 'Running Mate' http://www.trailrunner.com/trail_times/2013_news63%20_spring.pdf

It's the story of GECKO, with a whole lot of running all over the world, and it explains the history of how GECKO was formed and how Morgan and Mike met.

Happy reading!
